Management Consulting Career Fundamentals: Day-to-Day Work, Learn issue trees, hypothesis-driven problem solving, client slides and how management consultants use AI on projects.
Course Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Management Consulting Career Fundamentals: Day-to-Day Work teaches you how a junior management consultant turns a client question into checked analysis, clear recommendations and a handover the client can act on. Learn what the role produces, how the team works and where your responsibility ends and a client’s decision begins.
Follow a fictional engagement at PianalytiX for Ternbrook Home Services, a home-heating repair business considering a parts-readiness test. Worked documents connect the question, evidence, review comments and client decision. Company details and outcomes are fictional teaching examples; working practices and job titles vary by organization.
The consulting role
- Understand a deliverable, an output the client uses to evaluate or act on an agreed question.
- Compare consulting firm types, career paths and the work of strategy analysts, internal consultants, business analysts, project managers and industry specialists.
The team and working rhythm
- Identify decision rights, meaning who may approve a particular choice, and choose the right colleague and request channel.
- Prepare for a consulting workday, evidence reviews, client working sessions and steering reviews where client decisions are considered. Account for changing time-zone overlap and agreed availability.
Problem-solving fundamentals
- Write a problem statement that defines the question, scope, decision owner and success criteria.
- Build an issue tree, a question divided into smaller questions. Apply MECE: mutually exclusive branches do not overlap, and collectively exhaustive branches cover the defined whole.
- Test a hypothesis, a proposed explanation, against supporting and disconfirming evidence. Turn the investigation into a workplan with owners, dependencies and completion checks.
Analysis and client communication
- Explore market sizing, estimating demand for a defined market; benchmarking, comparison against a suitable reference; and cost analysis.
- Check Excel models and PivotTables, which summarize source records. Reconcile totals by comparing them with the source, and inspect the definitions behind each calculation.
- Prepare neutral interview questions, precise data requests and evidence notes that separate observation from interpretation.
- Use the Minto Pyramid Principle to group support beneath the main answer. Write action titles, slide headings that state the conclusion, with clear charts, source notes and visible conditions.
AI in consulting work
- Understand how knowledge assistants support finding and organizing permitted material.
- Use approved AI for research, interview themes, analysis support and slide drafts. Check original sources, recompute calculations and trace themes to exact notes.
- Protect client confidentiality by checking the permitted purpose, tool and data before use. Keep decisions and release approval with the responsible people.
The engagement from start to handover
- Follow kickoff, diagnosis, recommendations and the final client presentation, including the AI draft and human check at each phase.
- Explain a business case, the costs, benefits and conditions supporting a proposed action. Use a roadmap to sequence actions and dependencies.
- Record decisions and transfer accepted actions, evidence and review responsibilities to client owners.
Tools, documents and consulting language
- Connect Excel analysis, PowerPoint presentations, Teams discussion, SharePoint documents, Microsoft Planner tasks and permitted Microsoft Copilot drafting to their role in the work.
- Understand thinkcell as a charting add-in and compare tool categories and alternatives. Read terms in working documents and keep source versions traceable.
When client work goes wrong
- Follow an analysis error from a release hold through source tracing, a reviewed replacement and a transparent correction.
- Check how combining records can duplicate rows, then record checks that help prevent recurrence.
Before your first project
- Assess skills through observable work, plan practice with a reviewer and propose a 90-day plan with locally agreed milestones.
- Prepare for case and experience interviews, compare entry requirements and explain a clearly labeled fictional portfolio sample.
Practical tools for your own work
Use the team contact map, meetings guide, problem-solving templates, consulting analysis workbook, vocabulary reference, AI review checklist, error response card, skills plan and hiring guide. Filled fictional examples and blank working areas help you apply the methods while keeping your evidence and decisions explicit.
